The Glentoran Football Academy Ghana, within a relatively short existence in the region, has helped many street children to get off the streets through the Academy’s periodic soccer competitions. The project has been used to spread the message of the dangers and effects of HIV/AIDS to the youth and also spread the message of Gender Equality and Womens Empowerment across the Sunyani Municipal Assembly and Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana as a whole during soccer competitions.
Street children are admitted into the Academy on a space available basis after the games are held. Much as the staff would wish to accommodate many, if not all, of the street kids into the Academy, the accommodation factor will not currently permit them to do so. As a result of the project though, some of the street children have been reunited with their families through our support by helping the families to understand the sports potential of their wards through their involvement in our games. Though these children do not stay on the premises, they are still considered part of the Academy as they continue to train with the teams.
The project has developed over a period of two years where inevitable mistakes have been made and learnt from. Based on this knowledge Christopher Antoh Forsythe and his staff are now able to deliver a professional service to entire population of the Academy. The programme is delivered at the same time and place every day and every week of the year. The project has developed over time based on feedback and requests from players and participants to meet their needs. Strong working partnerships with the Sunyani Municipal Assembly enable the Academy to concentrate on its strengths whilst outsourcing other deliverable areas. The advanced monitoring and evaluation system will make the set up very transparent and accountable to prospective funders, hopefully ensuring the best possible outcomes.
At the moment there are no funders for the project. Though they do receive kits from Glentoran Football Club, and Mercy Corps/NikeGo, but financial support comes from only one source which is Christopher Antoh Forsythe. The project is delivered by a full time Technical team and a strong team of dedicated volunteers. The Academy recruits players by working in partnership with organizations that have existing relationships with target groups, such as homeless hostels, day centres and local authorities.
The children are enrolled in schools to continue their education alongside the football training, and those who are more interested in skill based training learn how to become masons, plumbers and carpenters etc.
The Glentoran Football Academy Ghana holds training for all the children from Monday to Friday early in the morning before they attend classes and also compulsory evening training where those children who don’t live on the Academy premises joins their colleagues.
The Academy is involved in the Regional Youth League and plays its matches during the weekends. There are three breaks in the curriculum every year at the Academy, the Easter Break, Summer Break and Christmas Break. This allows the children to meet their families.
The dedicated Technical Team is responsible for the evaluation of the children at the end of every month.
